Comparative Overview of Project, Program, and Portfolio Management


Project

is a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service, or result.


Program

is a group of related projects managed in a coordinated way to obtain
benefits and control not available from managing them individually. Programs may
include elements of related work (e.g., ongoing operations) outside the scope of the
discrete projects in a program.

Portfolio

is a collection of projects (temporary endeavors undertaken to create a unique product, service, or result) and/or programs (a group of related projects managed in a coordinated way to obtain benefits and control not available from managing them individually) and other work that are grouped together to facilitate the effective management of that work to meet strategic business objectives. Thecomponents of a portfolio are quantifiable; that is, they can be measured, ranked, and prioritized.
